The 3rd MUFFINS Academic meeting has taken place at Newcastle University on the 23rd July 2019. All the three academic teams including academic investigators and researchers from Newcastle, Imperial and Glasgow discussed their individual progress of each work package. Several challenges have been highlighted and lessons learnt from parallel works carried out by PhD/MSc students related to multiphase flows problems have been shared. The revised work plan and interrelationships among different work packages have been discussed. The teams will meet and discuss with industry partners in September 2019 at Imperial College in London.

The academic teams presented their progress including a consideration of benchmarking case studies for multiphase liquid-gas slug flows travelling in a flexible catenary-shaped pipe. Discussion was centred around the experimental and computational models including a reduced-order modelling framework. The next Steering Committee meeting will take place at Imperial in September 2019.

All the three academic teams including academic investigators and postdoctoral researchers from Newcastle, Glasgow and Imperial met and discussed their individual progress of each work package. On the 20th March, all teams together with some industrial colleagues visited the world-class experimental multiphase flow facilities at TUV NEL in Glasgow for discussing on the experimental framework and slug flow-induced vibration model to be set up and carried out as part of the MUFFINS project.

All the three academic teams presented their progress following the proposed work packages and the wish lists from industry partners. A representative from the Energy Institute has been invited and taken part in this meeting, by also giving a presentation and discussion on how outcomes from MUFFINS could contribute to the industrial guidelines of FIV fatigue avoidance being improved. The next 2nd Academic & 4th Steering Committee meetings are being planned to take place at Glasgow/NEL and Imperial in March and April 2019, respectively.
